The Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) has five levels, from N5 (beginner) to N1 (advanced). Each level covers more kanji, from the 79 most basic characters at N5 up to 985 at N1. If you're starting out, begin with N5 and work upward; each level builds on the one before.
